X-Men Origins: Wolverine is yet another superhero game that follows from the movie of the same name. The primary difference in X-Men Origins: Wolverine over the others is that it is actually a bit of mindless, though often gory, fun and adventure. Though certainly not a game for the kids, Wolverine is a pretty decent little entrant into the superhero genre of third person action games.
What makes this game stand out is the over the top gore, as Wolverine repeats and expands upon the storyline from the movie. The blood that is shed in this game is remarkably realistic and at times disturbing. Though many will find this type of blood and guts fighting revolting, it does actually give the player a bit of guilty pleasure fun in a comic book world. If ever a game was in need of a rating to keep the kids out, then X-Men Origins: Wolverine is it. It is completely adults only.
The game controls for Wolverine are actually pretty solid. You have a number of combos, basic attacks, and power ups that you can use and learn somewhat quickly and easily. If you practice a bit, you can master Wolverine’s entire repertoire in an hour or two. The game play is fairly seamless, and not many people will have trouble adapting to the controls. When you play it with a game controller it is much easier than playing with keyboard and mouse. Still, even when you go with the keyboard and mouse the game is fairly easy to acclimate yourself to.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine takes you through several bosses and levels, and for the most part they are rendered clearly and with good detail. The actual surroundings in the game are a bit on the drab side, but the environment is interactive. For example, you can use the helicopter blades that are spinning as weapons and any sharp objects as potential impalers. This allows the game to feel somewhat real enough as you travel through and meet each of the game’s bosses. The game also does a wonderful job of increasing the difficulty as you go along and forcing you to learn the various combos, powerups and talents of Wolverine and his famous claws.
The only real knock against X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the fact that the game occasionally is a bit too easy. The entire game can be defeated by an experienced gamer in about nine hours, and that is pretty quick by action game standards. The lack of a multi-player feature is also a drawback to some, but the lone nature of Wolverine calls for that feature anyway.
Though the game has a few minor flaws, X-Men Origins: Wolverine is sure to be a gamer success overall, as a large number of players enjoy mindless slash and gash. When it comes to violence, blood, guts, and gore, X-Men Origins: Wolverine stands alone in a pile of superhero movie games from past release. Once again, however, it is not a game for the youngsters. Enjoy at your own peril.
